NEB to Long Island and back to NEB, Nov 9, 2013

Sat Nov 9 2013 NEB to Long Island and back to NEB

Here we go, heading south at last.  Had a 7am, flawless departure from NEB and headed for Norfolk Va.  The new engine hours read 4.7.  The weather was iffy but decided to go and get ahead of the ‘big” winds.
Bill Pelletier joined us as crew.

We got out passed Block Island and the winds and waves picked up and we pounded to just outside of Montauk Point.  At this time we discovered a leak in the top rudder post.  We couldn’t understand why the bilge pump kept going on and checked everything else first.

Because of the waves and spray crashing over the bow the hatches were leaking, the port holes leaking, the forward head soaked and the deck was not draining off the water quickly enough because the drains were plugged with bird poop and seeds. BUT, the full canvas enclosure was keeping us dry and warm, it is so worth every penny.

Time to make some phone calls. After discussion with several folks and the prospect of pounding thought the night and again tomorrow, potentially making the problem worse, we turned around and went back to NEB.  We arrived back in the slip at 8pm and proceeded to mess around with the electric cords/plugs.  After many unsuccessful attempts to get the 30 amp hooked up, we used the 50 amp cord and it worked just fine.

A dinner of hotdogs, beans and choc cake was a perfect way to end such a delightful day.  What is going on with Mother Nature, she must be have a bad hair week.

We will try again next week, maybe she will be in a better mood.
